How to train your dragon. March 26.

The adventure comedy is set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, based on the book by Cressida Cowell. The story centers around a Viking teenager, who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. Initiation is coming, and this is his one chance to prove his worthiness to his tribe and father. But when he encounters, and ultimately befriends, an injured dragon, his world is turned upside down.

The Essay

Monday, 15 February 2010
I have chosen “Cloverfield” for my essay theme: describe relationship between story and the film structure. Cloverfield is a 2008 American monster movie directed by Matt Reeves, produced by J. J. Abrams and written by Drew Goddard.

THE END

Story : ballet-dancer, parcel tape, desert Island

Story:

An old toy shop has been in this town for many years and it was not the first time when a magic unbelievable story happened here.

A small snowy town with a little toy shop in the centre. The wind picks up a snowflake and sends it into a little journey. The snowflake flies into the toy shop through a small side window which was left open. The snowflake doesn’t melt and falls down in front of a toy. It is a ballet-dancer, one of the most beautiful in the world. She has got a sad look in her eyes which are directed to the opposite shelf. There stands a soldier and he is looking at her too. Their stares lure them to each other. The snowflake has already melted down and turned into a little puddle.

Soldier and ballet-dancer fall into their dreamland. They are dreaming about a desert Island where they can be alone and no one can interrupt their peace. The ballet-dancer is dancing and then falls into the soldier’s arms. They kiss.

Suddenly she disappears. The soldier opens his eyes and discovers that the ballet-dancer is gone. He tries to find her on the shelves but she isn’t there. Then he sees that she is put into the box by the seller.

There is a sound of parcel tape.

The door closes and the flow of snowflakes bursts into the shop. One of them falls on the soldier’s head. Water drops start falling from his eyes.

The poor soldier, with his head hanged down, is left alone on his shelf.

"Lord of the Rings" - Re-storyboarding

Saturday, 13 February 2010
I have tried to re-storyboard one sequence from the Lord of the Rings. This is the part where is Elrond tells a story about "The fall the mankind". I hope someone will be able to read this, because I have big doubt about readability of this.

The Fourth Kind

Friday, 12 February 2010

The Fourth Kind is a 2009 film directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. The Fourth Kind is a psychological thriller with elements of sci-fi, horror and mystery genres. It is directed in the “Blair Witch” and “Paranormal Activity” style i.e. documentary filming. In this case, even tapes with “real” people were used to convince audience in truthfulness. They were shown alongside with the film which, from the editing point of view, makes strong psychological impact on the audience’s mind.

The film opens with a literal introduction by Milla Jovovich, who explains that the film is based on actual footage from real cases. Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.

Before watching it you must answer the question to yourselves: are you ready to accept what you will see? Are you ready to believe in it? But if you are sceptic and 100% sure that there is nothing supernatural in this world and you are waiting effects and just another story about aliens: this is your choice and no one can judge you. Although, then I can assure you that this film is not for you. Most of the people made this mistake. They are not pleased, because they don’t believe and they don’t want to believe.
I think the lack of knowledge and factors as well as corrupted tapes don’t tell us that everything in this film is a trickery or just imagination of director.

Of course, I am not a fanatic of an alien idea and I am not trying to convince you that aliens do exist and that everything in this film is truth, but I just suggest you to think that if you don’t know something it doesn’t mean that it does not exist.

This is a heavy psychological, inexplicable documentary film with a big amount of dialogues. Is it scary? Rather yes than no. Thanks to these tapes with shaking people, screams etc. the film has a great eerie atmosphere, an atmosphere of mystery and uncanniness. It was really scary in a few moments, even when I knew what would happen in the next scene.

The editing plays strongly with your imagination. I think the editing is the best side of this film, because it makes psychological tension. The sequence when the patient is telling about his nightmares: camera shows you the patient, then the psychiatrist and when it comes back there is another patient with a similar problem and exactly the same description. It hits you with the full power. The cuts with owl especially make a psychological impact on your mind and play with your imagination.

I am not rejecting everything that I can not explain, so that’s why I did not write that this is just another sci-fi alien film. I enjoyed the atmosphere of The Fourth Kind and its thrilling sequences. I allowed myself to be imbued by its atmosphere and tried to feel and touch the watching subject.
After watching it I was left with strong “positive” emotions.

The Nutcracker

Tuesday, 9 February 2010
I want to share with you one of the animation of my childhood. The Nutcracker is a sensitive and beautiful animation which I suggest you to watch.

The Nutcracker (Russian: Щелкунчик, transcribed as Schelkunchik) is a 1973 Soviet animated film from the Soyuzmultfilm studio directed by Boris Stepantsev and based partly on Pyotr Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker, but more closely on E.T.A. Hoffmann's novelette The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the story which inspired the ballet.
