Concept Art Lecture

Wednesday 28 October 2009
It was usefull information. To be honest, Simon Holland didn't invent bicycle, but everything old is new again. And I think he gave us a good strategy how to successfully pass our second project and gave us good push to the next level. Big thanks to him !
Questions :
  1. Where I can buy Wacom tablet intuos 3/4. Price approx. 200£. +- 20-30£ ?
  2. Searching for drawing books, tutorials - perspective, anatomy, digital paintings etc. I need compact books without unnecessary blabbing with clear examples - clear and accessible for beginners.
  3. Where to start, if I never draw before ?
Please, help me.

Hey Alex, can't help observing that your cries for help seem a bit helpless - come on, there's one of the best art and design libraries in the country on the upper first, so get in there and solve your own damn problems! :-) I want my first year students to show initiative, be independent, and get off their bums!

Below are a few book titles available in Rochester UCA library - I found them by doing a search for 'perspective drawing' - it wasn't difficult...

A foundation course in drawing - Stanyer, Peter.
Drawing in perspective - Striegel, Oliver.
Anatomy and perspective : the fundamentals of figure drawing - Oliver, Charles.
Perspective for interior designers : simplified techniques for geometric and freehand drawing - Pile, John.

Glad you found Simon's presentation helpful... looking forward to seeing your research into Jules Verne gather speed - and also, I'd like you to post your considered critique on the production design for both The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Metropolis - you need to develop your critical eye and find positive ways to express it!

Oh look, Alex - even more helpful, useful books in the UCA library - it's a miracle! :-)

Digital fantasy painting workshop - McKenna, Martin.

Also - you'll get lots of hints, tips and instructions during your Friday sessions with Phill Hosking.

There are plenty of other student outlets on the web including several via Amazon.co.uk as far as I can tell this is the going rate(ish)
for this example, without going second hand that is.

Phils rather pointy comments are almost spot on in regards to books, however as usual Amazon is your friend, there are a wealth of books on there. Don't forget this is what your student loan is really for. Try and get them second hand, saves money, and with the one that I got all the tutorial disc were still sealed.
Hope that helps.

1.Misunderstanding. It was not cry, I just thought that there must be something polite in my speech. So, I wrote two magic words, help and please.
2. It's better to ask, than start from the beginning, maybe there already is better way to solve problems. Saving my time. And even if I didn't get an answer, you think I would just sit at
home ? wrong.
3. Okey, I'll try to get my thought in whole and write some words about Dr.Caligari and Metropolis.
4.Thank you, Simon ! And again, your lecture was helpful and great. Thanks a lot. I already have some DVD files from gnomon (Feng Zhu, Master Class etc). I'll bring tomorrow to university to share with people.
5.Phil, Simon, thanks a lot.
